Primanti Bros. 911 Free Sandwiches

When it was reported that Pittsburgh’s 911th Airlift Wing would be closed due to cost-cutting measures by the Air Force, the community, military and local politicians worked to prove that the airlift wing should stay. After the announcement that the unit would be spared, we decided that Primanti Bros., another Pittsburgh favorite, should join in the celebration.

We took to Facebook and Twitter to invite the 911th Airlift Wing’s personnel to celebrate with 911 free sandwiches at the base’s local Primanti Bros. We coordinated closely with the base’s communications team to maximize reach. The news spread fast thanks to widespread sharing via social media, with nearly 1,500 shares on Facebook alone – including 911th Airlift Wing and its members, media outlets, and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

The day of the event, the restaurant was packed with reservists and civilian employees of the base, and photos made the rounds on social media. To show their appreciation, personnel from the 911th Alrlift Wing returned to the Moon Township Primanti’s location with a plaque commemorating the event: it remains on the wall today.
